Pediatric Physical Therapy in Jackson Heights

Many couples start their family in Jackson Heights, and as any new parents, hope their child will have the best life possible.

Sometimes, difficulties can appear along the way.

Many children are born with serious conditions that can affect them developmentally and for years to come. Other children experience debilitating injuries that can affect them in the same way. This is where One To One Physical Therapy comes in.

You and your child do not have to suffer through the challenges alone. Our compassionate therapists will help to strengthen your child and your entire family with their emotional and therapeutical support.

Serious Conditions

Our pediatric physical therapists are available for all children suffering from symptoms big or small, short- or long-term.

Some of the more serious conditions that can be alleviated through physical therapy include:

  • Amputations
  • Burns
  • Cancer
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries

The relief can be physical, mental or both. Compassion, education and assistance are the target goals of physical care when your child contracts or is born with a serious disorder.

The Healing Process

In these cases physiotherapists normally have their first meeting with a family at a hospital or shortly after your child has been released as an outpatient.

While in hospital, your child’s therapist will meet with them multiple times throughout the week, sometimes on a daily basis at the beginning of treatment. Here they will work slowly to either make a long-term stay more comfortable, or build your child’s strength up to return home.

Therapy will proceed as usual with an assessment, followed by range of motion, strength and mobility exercises.

When it comes time for your child to return home, their therapist will discuss their home environment with the family—what obstacles may exist there? If stairs are a problem, a plan will be made to deal with this. Does your child need to be monitored or assisted in some way while they sleep? Plans for coping with this will also be implemented.

While therapists can plot your path, you are the most integral part to your child’s therapy and recovery. Your therapist will coach you and your child through outpatient treatment, but your strength will give them strength and together you can conquer anything.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children function at their best.

Kids love to be active and having a condition that affects this does not make for a good quality of life. This field of treatment allows them to explore Jackson Heights and the rest of the world with freedom.

Whether it’s a permanent condition, or recovery from an injury, occupational therapy can turn things around so that your child can be as active as they like.

Learning, playing, socializing—these are all important aspects of growing up and we make sure your child will not miss out.

Occupational therapy can also be thought of as “active” therapy. The exercises practiced in this style of therapy can include one more of the following:

  • Strength and range of motion
  • Perceptual skills to help map out surroundings
  • Mundane activities (eating, bathing, getting up and down stairs)
  • Fine motor skills (writing)

These are all presented in a light and fun setting, allowing your child to get involved in the practice with positive energy.

Making your child comfortable and happy in a therapy environment is what we aim for at One To One Physical Therapy.
